The early church: an annotated bibliography of literature in English (Thomas A. Robinson. ATLA bibliography series, no. 33. Philadelphia: American Theological Library Association; Metuchen, NJ: Scarecrow Press, 1993)
Divinity Trowbridge RR, BR162.2 R63 1993
SML Subject Bibliography BR162.2 R63X 1993 (LC)
"Includes books and articles selected for their value and accessibility to students; entries offer evaluative, useful annotations and employ symbols to indicate sourcebooks, summary articles, general works, and book reviews... Excludes specifically New Testament materials; includes important materials on the Roman empire. Modern author index and general index." (Balay BC222)
Designed as an aid for undergraduates, beginning graduate students, and "interested lay-people," this work offers a selective bibliography on Christianity from the second to the sixth centuries. Chapters 1-3 cover reference works; chapters 4-5 cover general works and collections. The remaining chapters (6-26, comprising the bulk of the text) are devoted to various topics, e.g. art and architecture, christology, ethics and sexuality, creeds, society and social issues, women, and worship and the liturgy. The bibliography focuses exclusively on English-language works, although the reference section does include some major foreign-language resources. Despite its title, this work is more than a bibliography. Robinson begins each chapter with an informative 2-3 page essay that provides an introduction to the chapter's topic and discusses problems with the literature, some historiography, and questions prominent in current academic debate. Some annotations for individual works also explain terms unfamiliar to the non-specialist.
Matrology: a bibliography of writings by Christian women from the first to the fifteenth centuries (Andrew Kadel. New York: Continuum, 1995)
Attempts "to list every Christian woman who wrote before 1500 C.E. and her writings that have appeared in print since 1800"--Introd. Texts are then listed in the following order: English translations; selections from anthologies, mostly in English, but occasionally in French or German; critical editions; other original-language editions; non-English translations. Manuscripts and rare books are not included. The work concludes with a selected bibliography of secondary sources on ancient and medieval women and related topics. Alphabetical and chronological indexes to the ancient and medieval authors are provided. Intended to be a usable guide for non-specialists as well as a reference source for scholars in a number of different disciplines.

Extensive bibliographies list critical editions, translations into modern languages, and articles and monographic studies of the writings discussed. Vol. 4 contains a brief introduction by the ailing Quasten and is designated as the final volume of his monumental work. Designed to be an exhaustive bibliography of works on New Testament apocrypha and pseudepigrapha up through the early 1980's. The author defines NT apocrypha and pseudepigrapha as those documents that "claim to be apostolic and spiritually equal to the [twenty-seven] New Testament writings"--Introd. Ninety-nine early Christian works dating mostly from the second though the fifth centuries are included in the bibliography. Excluded are works on the Apostolic Fathers, Nag Hammadi codices, Old Testament pseudepigrapha, certain early Syriac writings, early versions of the New Testament (e.g. the Diatessaron), and modern forgeries. The bibliography has two sections: (1) General, containing sections on studies, text editions, and translations; apocalyptic literature; apocryphal acts; canon; and fragments of unknown works. (2) Major works, organized in alphabetical order according to the name of the New Testament figure appearing in the title. There are cross-references to other sections but no annotations.
